Instead, the father shows incredible love by granting the request to his son.

He could not sell the land in the community during his father’s lifetime. No one would buy it. So, he travels to a distant land and sells his property, losing the right of the land. But then everything is lost. He was totally rejected by the people around him.

It seems his goal is to become a servant, to earn money, and maybe to begin to repay what he lost.

The father totally accepts his son. No bargaining is offered. He admits his guilty only. And the father brings the fattened calf, kill it, and eat.

The lost son is found but another son is lost.

The author is Luke, a Gentile by birth. Well educated in Greek culture, a physician by profession, a companion of Paul at various times from his second missionary journey to his first imprisonment in Rome and a loyal friend who remained with the apostle after others had deserted him.

Let’s explore this story further…..

1 A son is lost
     | 2 Goods wasted in extravagant
     | | 3 Everything lost
     | | | 4 The great sin
     | | | | 5 Total rejection
     | | | | | 6 A change of mind
     | | | | | 6 repentance
     | | | | 5 Total acceptance
     | | | 4 The great repentance
     | | 3 Everything gained
     | 2 Goods used in joyful celebration
    1 A son is found

Let’s look at the first one.

Give me my share – My son was dead and is alive , was lost and is found (verse 12 & 32)

The father loved his son so much that he granted his request for the inheritance. In the end, his father still loved him so much that he saw him from far away and ran to him

The most important thing is no matter how much we have turned our backs on God, when we truly repent and turn away from sin, He is already running out to embrace us. He desires for everyone to enter His kingdom, because that is where we truly belong.

Let’s look at the second and third points.

the younger son packed… wasted his money – Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him… put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet (verse 13-14 & 22-23)

The younger son made a really bad decision. He thought that in this world, money was all he wanted and that he would find freedom outside of his father’s care.

But he gave him the best robe, the ring, and a pair of sandals. Whatttt….a pair of sandals? Quite funny, isn’t it? What do sandals have to do with freedom? Well, sandals marked a person’s free status, because slaves at that time went barefoot.

The most important thing is how God treats us; we are rebellious creatures, yet He clothes us with His righteousness, showers us with his rich and glorious splendor and give us a majestic welcome home.

Let’s look at the fourt and fifth points.

To give the pigs their food and no one have him – I have signed against heaven .. His father ran and kissed him (verse 15 – 16 & 19 – 20)

Unfortunately, what happened next was very sad, and he faced a cruel situation. A famine came.. there was no rain, and the crops died. People were extremely hungry because there was no food to eat.

The son had no choice and desperately needed a job, so he took work feeding pigs. The food was fine for the pigs, but not meant for him. It was disgusting, yet he was hungry enough to want to eat it. He really stripped all of his value and worth.

The most important thing to see is this; no matter how many times we fall and fail, we keep living and dying only for ourselves. Repent.. repent.. repent… Ask the Lord opens our eyes, we stop living for ourselves but for somebody else named Jesus Christ.

And the last

I Will set out and go back to my father – make me a servant (verse 18 & 19)

It is so interesting that God finds us even when we think we aren’t “as bad” as others. Well, let’s look at the older brother in the story. He worked very hard, thought he was the better son, and believed he deserved a party.

Sometimes we are like both brothers. We rebel like the younger son, thinking our way is better than God’s. Or are we more like the older brother hmmm.. thinking I’m not as bad as other people. What’s the problem?

Yes that’s the problem..

We lose sight of the fact that we are just as in need of God’s Grace ~ Soli Deo Gloria ~

Luke 15: 11 – 32 The prodigal is shown as wishing for his father’s death in his request because the estate was never divided among the children until the father’s death.
